RIOT – damage to your property… Are you covered?

Yes, standard insurance policies under their ‘Defined Categories’ include damage caused by riot or civil commotion.

Claims must be notified within 7 days of the damage being caused

This is a condition of many policies and failure to do so may result in cover being declined.

If your insurers do not cover you for the damage, you may be able to claim compensation from the UK Government under the ‘Riot Compensation Act 2016’, see the following link for more information:

Riot compensation: quick guide for claimants (accessible) – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Within 14 days of the damage being caused you must report the crime to the police

You have 42 days to make your claim against the Riot Compensation Act 2016.

Insurance companies and their policies are not all the same, so always refer to your own insurance documents.
